Personality: Riku was once a cocky, arrogant kid. He was competitive, had a bit of a mean streak, was more than a little self-absorbed, and loved to show off how much better he was than everyone by beating them at competitions or duels. Ever since he was little he was obsessed with the possibility of leaving his world, which he saw as small and confining. As he got older he became more and more obsessed with this, going so far as to open himself to the darkness in order to get away from home.

That went as well as you’d expect it to.

Riku had to grow up after realizing how much he screwed up. Guilt became like a second skin to him. Guilt for the pain he caused his friends Kairi and Sora, guilt for helping Maleficent kidnapping the other princesses of heart. Guilt for letting himself become so envious of Sora that he nearly ruined their friendship.

Over the course of the year after the events of Kingdom Hearts II Riku starts becoming the man he is today, a calm, thoughtful man prone to self-doubt and filled with the desire to make up for his past mistakes, despite that the two he harmed the most, Kairi and Sora, have forgiven him completely. It’s only after he’s promoted to Keyblade Master does he finally begin to forgive himself. He takes to his new duties like a duck to water. He’s not as serious as some of his predecessors, who didn't like the idea of non-keyblade wielders wondering the worlds and knowing about it, because mostly he figures that ship has sailed, but he really doesn't like people messing with the worlds regardless.

Though a lot more calmer and prone to navel gazing now, Riku is still fairly competitive, and capable of humor, and will put on shows of arrogance for humor's sake.

Despite his doubts about his character Riku's heart and will is still incredibly strong, and anyone who doubts it will be in for a surprise.
